“Genius Loci” Sees Artist Marina Esmeraldo Traveling Through Her Memory
WORKING NOT WORKING
Barelona and London-based WNW Member Marina Esmeraldo is always in transit as a creative. Never one to get comfortable or settle, many of her projects are a disassembling or melding of styles and mediums. While Marina’s current practice is rooted in illustration and image-making, she’s lately been moving things from digital back to analog, a journey that also has her exploring her past as an architect. “Genius Loci” is the culmination of this current exploration. Traditionally used within the framework of architecture (and a Latin expression meaning “the spirit of places”), Genius Loci is about revisiting the places she’s been through the lens of memory. “The goal was capturing the essence of my travels, wanderlust being a recurring theme in my work. Through the abstract interpretation of the places of my memories, I created an installation combining mural painting and relief works, as well as a collection of wooden sculptures.”
