Duality Derby: A Dark Igloo Film for 2020
WORKING NOT WORKING
Does 2020 have you feeling grateful or resentful? And how do you keep your eyes on the prize when two vastly different emotions are designed to clash and jockeying for your attention? Buckle up.
WNW Members Mark Miller & Dave Franzese have spent the past dozen years collaborating at their Brooklyn based studio Dark Igloo. Over the last seven years, they’ve been focused on refining the world of short form content branding & directing GIPHY. Today, they dropped a trailer for their first short film Duality Derby.
“We made this for the community as much as ourselves, and really just want to share some of what we learned in the last 2 years at the grindstone. If we can try a new medium, learn a new skill, or collaborate with a new friend / specialist, it keeps us engaged in the work, personally evolving, and avoiding burnout.”
Dark Igloo took the term “passion project” to a new level by self-funding the film, designing two cars and race uniforms, writing and performing the soundtrack, flipping 50+ logos, and ultimately crashing the cars in front of a roaring crowd at a demolition derby. Though the conceit of this project appears only two-sided, Dark Igloo’s latest invites commentary in a plethora of realms, from advertising and sponsorship to spectacle and psychology.
“Duality Derby began with a simple question: What if we fabricated two art cars and destroyed them in a demolition derby? The characters, costumes, and carnage that was born from that inquiry allowed us to dive deeper: Can the best parts of ourselves exist without the worst parts of ourselves? Can a project serve as a meditation for all those involved? Who’s really behind the wheel?
Crashing these cars, and designing this world, was one of the greatest joy rides of our lives.”
The film feels prescient in a time when our country is at its most divided. They say hindsight is 20/20 but Dark Igloo has their eyes fixed on the horizon.
